: When Time Suspended

Although a technical marvel, the Hermès Arceau Le Temps Suspendu’s unique time suspension function draws us towards a more philosophical rather than scientific discussion. What if suspending time were no longer a fantasy? What if you could truly pause a moment?

The Arceau Le Temps Suspendu is a romantic story about pausing time through mechanical ingenuity. The triple retrograde display, akin to a magic trick,  allows time to run or pause at the wearer’s command. By pressing the button at nine o’clock, time “stops” with the hour and minute hands moving to a position near 12 o’clock and holding there, although one that does not indicate a specific time so as not to be read inadvertently. Simultaneously,  the date hand is concealed beneath a retrograde date plate. Without time and date, only the moment you’re in remains, and the passage of time is put aside.  Pressing the button again instantly returns the hands to display the current time and date, as if the frozen interval had never occurred.

This horological superpower is driven by a new, upgraded movement. First presented in 2011, Hermès has reintroduced this whimsical Agenhor-modified complication. The key upgrade is the replacement of the ETA2892 base with a Vaucher-based automatic brass calibre H1837, an in-house movement that has served to power several other Hermès timepieces. This new engine allows the watch to be presented in a slightly smaller (42mm instead of 43mm) and thinner Arceau case,  an iconic design for its asymmetrical lugs that evoke the stirrups on a horse’s saddle, building on the equestrian theme that the maison often uses.

Giving the timepiece a more modern and bold look, the dial has transformed from previously muted style to a design with striking visual impact. Offering three choices of colours which are Brun Désert, Rouge Sellier, and Sunburst Blue, the dial was further elaborated with three distinct textures: a sunburst time ring, a centred coloured sapphire section revealing the movement’s mechanics, and a sand-blasted finish for the date fan and the 12 o’clock zone, highlighting where the hands come to rest when time is suspended.

This innovation is anything but typical in the world of horology. The Arceau Le Temps Suspendu doesn’t just solve a practical wonder of timekeeping; it poses a more profound question. Its true quest is perhaps one of ultimate self-discovery: When would you want to suspend time, and when would you choose to resume it?
